What are routines and why are they important?

Routines are patterns of behavior that are regular and repetitive.
Routines provide structure for daily life.
A routine is a sequence of actions that are regularly followed.
They can be satisfying and promote for both the child and the parents.
Children benefit from structure because it makes the child aware of what activity is coming next.

What are the benefits of having a routine?

Routines reduce stress and improve positive behavior.
A structured home environment will lead to better outcomes for school years because they will already know how to stick to a schedule.

Strategies for creating a routine?

Start small. Getting a routine built up can take some time. Dip your toes in the water before jumping all in. For example, start a morning routine and once the child gets adjusted, you can start to add on more structure and activities.
Have a set time for waking up and going to bed. Plain and simple. Establishing a set time for waking up and going to bed will ensure your child is getting enough sleep
Make a reward chart. Children are more likely to follow a schedule if they know they will get something in return. Make a fun chart like the one above and put stickers on it for every task they complete. If they have a lot of stars at the end of the week, give them a treat!
Prepare the night before. Routines are easier to follow if everything is prepared the night before. Set their clothes out for the morning and pre-making breakfast are great ways to save time in the morning and reducing the stress on you and your child.
